cooked battery

My 1986 FXRS-SP is cooking the battery...........any advice would be greatly appreciated............thanks, Dutch in ATL

May be time to check the output of the system to the battery and possibly replace the regulator.

Faulty regulater that is allowing too much power through to the battery
However a faulty battery that is low on charge would be given sufficent power to charge it if the cells are low on fluid it will start to overheat and boil off the battery fluid lowering the charge in the battery and the regulater will keep supplying more power to it

I thought the same..............battery is brand new....replaced it as the old one cooked to the point of swelling the case.........I thought the battery was bad........but I took a short ride with the new battery and I got home and it was spitting some fluid.......Thanks for getting back to me

New regulator is where i would start
Might be worth checking the voltage at the battery with the bike running even when you rev to 2k rpm voltage should not go above 14.5 volts if it does then you have a fault with the regulator
