Clutch Free Play

glider.

BOT Machine
This is where the free play in the system should be checked and adjusted to 1/16" to 1/8" for proper operation. This shouldn't be confused with the clutch plate adjustment inside the primary. Each has it's own purpose.

I have adjusted the clutch and the free play on the 97 ultra 4 times. Every time I do the free play remains an eight inch till the bike warms up then there is no free play. Then after a while I have about 1/4 to 3/8 play. The bike shifts like it should up shift, but when I go to down shift It will sometimes not down shift unless I let the clutch out a llittle ways. Other times it downs shifts with no problems.

Clutch adjustment has to be done when it is stone cold.

Suggestion:

You might want to check the clutch cable for wear inside that cable housing...

IF the housing is worn enough it will do just what you say.

Loose then tight.... Depending on where it is pulling thru.

Also check the routing of the clutch cable for No sharp bends. It needs to be Easy curves where needed...
