Bugs need that last 20 inches

Wife and I made a short 200 mile circle yesterday. It was a beautiful day. 75 degrees and very slight winds. Lots of motorcycles and group rides. We left Lewiston, Id. heading North. Took 195 to Spokane to 90 East to 95 South.
Stopped at the Coeur 'd Alene casino for the $40.00 6.95 special lunch special. Geezzz, you'd think I'd have learned by now! About the time we are entering Moscow, Id. I noticed how many bugs have splattered on my windshield. Lots of BIG splatters. I've been riding with a windshield for about 3 years now and I have a lot of years without a windshield. I just don't remember all those bug splatters in my face. Sure, I had few splatters. Some really good ones and ate a few bugs but I just don't remember that many so I've come to the conclusion that bugs need that last 20 inches or so before your face to bob or weave or swerve to keep from running into you and just the really old or slow bugs are the ones that reach 'splatter'.

I'm wondering...Has anyone gone from windshield to no windshield? Don't
think I'll go back to no windshield.

I have been riding my Ultra for almost a year now, very comfortable on the bike. While I have been getting a starter bike ready for my wife I have been doing test rides on it without a windshield. Good grief, at 50 mph I was getting the devil beat out of me, not counting the bugs and debris. Needless to say I have ordered her a windshield, should be here tomorrow. When I was younger I never remember it being an issue, rode for years without one. I have for sure been spoiled by the Ultra. :D

Went for many years behind the fairing/windshield, full face helmet on metrics...first time with the Sporty, really liked riding without windshield with 1/2 helmet and googles only...for about 4 months = up until the first time I rode for 2 1/2 miles behind an uncovered gravel truck in a mountain area construction road up and down hills...opted to go to snap on faceshield right after, then opportunity for windshield surfaced, so "face self-preservation" trumped the minor inconvenience of bugs in the teeth scenario...:khee

Yes, my windshield ends up looking like bug gut heaven too.
However, the one thing that really frosts me is that it is usually the first one, which is also the biggest by the way, that smacks my windshield dead center where I look through. Drives me nuts. Actually makes my forehead itch trying to look through it.

Yeah, I know. That's what my wife thinks too.....................:newsmile105:

+1 on the WS. I went for years without and can't figure out why! LOL! The other day while riding on my ultra with my better half, a bug managed to slide in between the WS and me and BANG! Right above the left eye on the brow. A reminder of what I don't miss. Even with a WS they rascals can get you, but not as often. I love my WS not only for bugs, but for rain, hail and rocks. I guess I am not as tough as I used to think I was. (Or maybe I am a little smarter?) NAW!

Hi All, New to the forum, new to Harleys. Finally got my RK after 35yrs waiting.
Story reminded me of when I was younger (many years ago). Riding my 650 Honda, to fast, down little back road. Ran into a swarm of bees. Fortunately was wearing full face, gloves and jacket. Well didn't get stung, however these were "honey" bees. What a mess! Cleaned off visor and went the hour long ride rest of the way home. The wife after laughing and wiping the tears from her eyes, helped me clean up.

I went from a sportster to my Eglide, and I agree with you on the bugs. I think its like that windex commercial where if the glass is too clean they run into it. Look at all the free protien you could of had, and saved the 40.00 on lunch.

Yep, I too rode for years w/o a windshield and never seemed to hit as many bugs as with the windshield. I have to clean them off as soon as I get home or the ants make a trail up the jiffy stand and head straight for the fairing. If they would eat a little faster and do a better job cleaning their plate, I wouldn't need to clean the windshield at all. :D

I was going to brag about my 8"Clearview but today at 75 a june bug hit me on the forhead and dang near dropped me.Great shield anyway.

That's exactly why I went with the 12 inch/with re-curve Clearview. I rode at dusk a few weeks ago and my windshield was covered, but no bugs hit my face. I also love that there is no distortion with the Clearview.
