Bouncing Needle

I just finished painting my bike. It is a 03 FLHT. After I got it all together the speedometer keeps bouncing from one speed to another. It will hold the correct speed for awhile then drop to 0 then back to correct speed. I am going to remove the outer fairing and check the plug wire into the speedometer and see if it is ok. If it is what should I check next?

If it was fine before,I would start with the connectors as you stated,but I would also check that all my ground wires were attached securely and making good metal contact,not trying to contact through paint.

Thanks....I will check all that. One more question. The wires coming off the top of the transmission cover do they have anything to do with the speedometer?

Usually the one in the chrome cover on top of the trans is the neutral switch. There is a speed sensor on the case of the trans that can cause the problem too.
