Proper belt tension is important on any belt drive bike. If it is too loose, it can whipsaw and break a belt. Too tight and it can damage bearings in the trans and/or wheel. It can also shorten the life of the belt if not properly adjusted and make odd noises too.
Harley makes a tool that is used to set the belt at the proper tension and they are available at the dealers. HD pt# 40006-85
Below are a few examples of how it works. You measure the deflection in the belt with the force needed to compress the tool to the markings for 10 LBS.
