Stonington - Two men were killed late Sunday afternoon after the motorcycle they were riding crashed on Route 184 near the North Stonington town line.

Police are expected to release the names of the victims, one of whom is from Ledyard, this morning. Police Capt. Jerry Desmond said the other victim is originally from the area but now lives in another state.

Desmond said the initial investigation indicated the motorcycle was traveling west on Route 184 at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control just east of Taugwonk Road at about 4:10 p.m.

The crash closed Route 184 between Taugwonk and Stony Brook roads for about four hours. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to The Westerly Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Police and an accident reconstruction expert are investigating the crash.

Marty Jefson, who lives at 825 New London Turnpike, which is Route 184, said Sunday afternoon that he was mowing his lawn and didn't hear the crash.

But when he saw flashing police lights and went down to see what had happened, the red motorcycle lay 60 yards from his driveway.

This road is a favorite place for cars and bikes to "open it up" because it is a long straight-away. This is a shame. Ride safe everyone!

Not saying this is what happened but it reminded me of the day in the MSF class where we discussed accidents.

The vast majority of fatal motorcycle accidents involve alcohol and the rider losing control of his bike at high speeds or in a corner. For all the slamming of "cagers" we tend to do here, sometimes we are our own worst enemies.

Update: Stonington — Police have identified the two people who were killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon as 22-year-old James Austin of Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, and 15-year-old Levi Masalin of Ledyard.

Police said it appears the motorcycle was traveling west on Route 184 at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control just east of Taugwonk Road at about 4:10 p.m.

Police believe Austin was driving the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Masalin, of 24 Maple Terrace, was taken to Westerly Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Masalin is the son of the director of Ledyard’s Public Works Department, Steven Masalin, the town’s mayor confirmed

So young, I feel very bad for the families of these two young men. :(
