99 FLHR Fuel Level Gauge Light

I've got an intermittent issue with my tank mounted gas gauge. The light that illuminates the gauge is off more than on. I'm guessing a loss of ground connection but not sure. What would be involved trying to fix it myself? To beat some of you to the punch...the answer is not riding my scoot only during the day! LOL

First question is do you have a manual? If so have you tried to remove the cap that the lamp is in?

Yep, got a manual. Basically it sez the tank needs to be drained and pulled. Too much work I think for a loose ground wire.

No I haven't tried removing the gauge yet. The manual sez pull strait up, and replace the gasket when I put it back.

What I was hoping was if anyone had any advice or tips on making this any easier.
