The 1997 should be an EVO engine with a 5-spd tranny. Is that what you are looking at?

On the current TC bikes, the engine and tranny are bolted together, but they are separate components.

Are you looking at a Sportster?

Thanks for the replies. My friend has a 98 heritage with cut off pipes because they had gotten damaged. A service manager has offered to GIVE me a set of pipes for his bike, but wanted to make sure what his bike had as far as what I was asking you guys.

A service manager...as in a Harley service manager
 
well counting the Twin cam didnt hit the softail line till 2k its a evo engine
