96 Sportster Starting problem

My wife's sportster suddenly quit cranking and just clicks repeatedly. I remove the spark plugs and it cranks normally. Put the plugs back in and it starts to crank then just clicks. Checked the wire between the solenoid and the starter motor (heavy gauge braided copper wire) and cleaned the connecting terminal. Still the same problem. Any ideas?

Have you load tested the battery?

Removed the battery and still the same thing when jumped. Bringing a volt/ohm meter home monday to test with, also taking the battery to work to charge.

Check the grounds. Be sure to check the battery ground.
