86 FLHTC - Gauges Cutting out

The bike has developed an intermittent electrical gremlin thats driving me nuts. The bike starts great, the gauges all work including the tach and the headlight. While driving the gauges will all drop to zero including the tach and the headlight will cut out. I have a the wiring diagram but no ideal where to start???
 
Id start by checking all the grounding points take them off clean all the mating surfaces then refit

Thinking the same thing, it's a ground problem. I have the factory manual with the wiring diagrams but it doesn't indicate where the grounds are on the bike. I suspect there's one for the fairing somewhere?
 
If everything is cutting out, I would start with the battery cables at the battery and move to the chassis ground on the negative cable. Remove them and clean up the connections. On an older bike there is plenty of miles on those connections.

Also check over the main circuit breaker too.
