2003 FLHTCUI Electrical Issues

Rick Mead

New Member
I have a 2003 FLHTCUI and am having electrical issues that I am hoping to get some help with.

When the Ignition switch is in the IGN position running & instrument lights come on and the system relay clicks, brake light is engaged
When the kill switch is in the run position the horn sounds steady (not in bursts like a security, which bike is not equipped with)
When the start button is engaged the relay under the seat on the rear fender clicks (this is one of the issues I am having, the relay looks factory stock, but doesn't seem to show up in my clymers wiring diagram, its a module that has an input and an output plug with 2 OMRON GL5E-14's sealed inside.
When the ignition switch is in the ACC position the running lights go off, the tachometer light goes off (speedo and other gauge lights stays on)

Needless to say the bike doesn't crank or or obviously start... I have checked the starter by applying direct current and it turns, I think this is a ground issue, but I wanted to see if anyone had any input before I go through all the wiring.

I am electrically challenged and not much help on the electrical issues but I can tell you that if you plan to do diagnostic testing using a wiring diagram, I would not rely on the Clymer manual and get the HD service manual for your bike. JMHO.

Over my head also, as Dolt said a Clymer service manual is 2nd best to an original HD.

Welcome to the forum, from Ohio.

With all these electric problems , is it still possible to read error codes , in the speedo display. This may point you in the direction , of the problem.
About the brake light engaging , take a look at the front switch, in the housing . The lever presses this switch in rest-position , there could be to much free play , causing the brakelight to stay on.

Good luck

You might want to check the fuse box and ECM for corrosion and/or moisture intrusion, they can act as a ground short and a bugaboo to diagnose. As others I am challenged electrically so that's my only suggestion.
Welcome to the forum from Gulf Coast AL.

Welcome from Spokane.
Check for codes and write them down.
Follow diag chat if there is any.
Disconnect the battery and clean both cables.
Find all grounds and clean them.
Start with disconnecting ECM to check each pin for corrosion.
Inspect all fuses, again for corrosion. Same with relays.
Not saying this is the problem but your bike is old enough to have corrosion in connectors mainly from periods of none use with battery connected.
Sometimes unplugging switches can clean the contacts but use electrical cleaner as needed.
How old is the battery. Low voltage internal short can cause relays to act up.

Below is a list of comprehensive list of diagnostic codes that you may come across on your Harley-Davidson.
How to Read Error Codes
  1. With the ignition in the off position, press and hold the trip meter button, and turn the ginition swith to the on position.
  2. Release the button. Your speedo indicators should illuminate and the needle should do a full sweep.
  3. “diag” will appear on the odometer screen. Press the trip button once.
  4. “PSSPt” is now displayed. Each of the letters represents a different area.
    • P = ECM / ICM (Engine / Ignition Control Module)

    • S = TSM / TSSM (Turn Signal / Turn Signal Security Module)

    • SP = Speedometer

    • t = Tachometer
  5. You can highlight each area by pressing the button. Once the area you wish to select is highlighted, press and hold the button for 5 seconds.
  6. If there are any codes, you will be able to go through them one at a time by pressing the button. Once you have them recorded, they can be cleared by holding the button for more than 5 seconds. Once “clear” is on the screen, press the button once more.
  7. To exit the Diagnostic Mode, turn the ignition switch off.

I am electrically challenged and not much help on the electrical issues but I can tell you that if you plan to do diagnostic testing using a wiring diagram, I would not rely on the Clymer manual and get the HD service manual for your bike. JMHO.

I appreciate the replies... The battery is brand new, actually replacing it was the start of all this... I replaced all 4 relays (except for the 2 replays in the sealed connector on fender and cleaned all connections, i went through fairing wires made sure the clips didn't cut the harness, which I am told is common... However I did download the HD service manuals for my bike, and the suggestion was 100% correct that it is a FAR superior source of information and trouble shooting diagnostic help... I am on my way out to the garage now, I will post what the conclusion is.

Again thanks for the replies...

Rick

Below is a list of comprehensive list of diagnostic codes that you may come across on your Harley-Davidson.

Hey Jeff... I really appreciate you taking the time to reply with this info and it will be a great resource for people with '04 and later twins, but just so no one gets confused, this isn't the procedure for pulling codes on my bike... for the 00-03 its:

1. Remove right side saddlebag and side cover if so equipped. Remove protective plug from data link connector. Other models will be under the seat.

2. To activate the diagnostic feature, follow these steps.
a. Create diagnostic test wire or use a female spade clip which will bridge the two terminals perfectly.
b. Install diagnostic test wire/clip across Terminals 1 and 2 on the data link connector, they are marked.
c. Turn Ignition/Light Key Switch to IGNITION and wait approximately 10 seconds (4 seconds lamp ON, 6 seconds lamp OFF) for check engine lamp to start flashing.

3. All trouble codes are sent out as a series of flashes. To retrieve the first digit of the trouble code simply observe the number of times the lamp flashes.
a. The lamp will then flash one or more times to indicate the first digit of the trouble code.
b. The length of time the lamp is illuminated and the length of time in which it is off are each about 0.5 second in duration.

4. The second digit follows:
a. Following the transmission of the first digit, there is a 1.2 second pause in which the lamp is off.
b. The lamp will then flash one or more times to indicate the second digit of the trouble code. Count the number of times the lamp flashes to retrieve the second digit.

5. If more than one trouble code is sent:
a. Following transmission of the second digit of the first code, there is a 3 second pause in which the lamp is off.
b. Once all codes have been sent, the data string is repeated. When you have recorded the same trouble code twice, it is an indication that the transmission has been restarted and that all trouble codes have been retrieved.

NOTE: If diagnostic test wire is installed across Pins 1 and 2 on connector in lieu of a Scanalyzer, the ECM is placed in a diagnostic test mode and the engine will start. The test wire must be removed from the data connector and the ignition switch turned OFF or the check engine lamp will continue to flash codes. A historic trouble code resides in the memory of the ECM until the code is cleared by use of the Scanalyzer or a total of 50 trips has elapsed. A "trip" consists of a start and run cycle, the run cycle lasting at least 30 seconds. After the 50 trip retention period, the trouble code is automatically erased from memory (that is, assuming no subsequent faults of the same type are detected in that period). The numbers after the 'historic' or 'current' is the speedo code number, but without the electrical diagnostics manual you're peeing into the wind.
