1991 FLHTC Starter Install

This is my first attempt at changing out the starter on my 1991 FLHTC.
After the removal of the exhaust pipe on the left side and the primary cover
is it necessary to remove the clutch to get to the jackshaft bolt.
Also what type of replacement starter is recommeded. I believe the original starter is a 2.0 kw. JP Cycles has a lot of different type starters not sure on the replacement. Any help is greatlly appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank B.

You should have no problem getting at the jackshaft bolt with the clutch still in place
just remember to replace the tab washer that secures the jackshaft as the tab will not take being used more than once

Does the tab washer come with the new starter ?

My mistake the original starter is a 1.2 KW is it ok to install a 1.4 kw ?
Looks like most starters are 1.4, 1.8, 2.0. Not sure what to order.

I have never had to replace a starter but have had them out once or twice and the tab brakes off when you straighten it to get the jackshaft off
